Job Watch for Programmers

On-Line Job Information

On-Line Job and Career Information

Here are some web sites that can be useful in looking for jobs. Uselful information about searching for a job, job listings, resume postings, and information about companies. Warning to the wise, many managers find professional recruiters, referrals, and networking much better at finding new employees than newspapers ads and Net postings.

America's Job Bank
Run by US Department of Labor. Includes job listings, career information, links to individual state employment services (none for California), private placement centers. On-line versions of government publications are available.

CareerExpo
Hightech job listings from 500+ companies, resume center where you can post a resume, job fairs, links to other resources. Also contains High Technology Careers Magazine which "brings technical professionals a broad range of current information on career opportunities and the latest in high technology growth and development."

Career Mosaic
Job listings, resume posting, on-line job fairs, career resource center,College Connection college and career-related sites on the Web for students. Not limited to high-tech, but they do list Qualcomm.

Careerpath
After registering for free you can search the classified ads in the following newspapers: Atlanta Journal-Constitution, The Boston Globe, Chicago Tribune, The Columbus Dispatch, The Hartford Courant, Los Angeles Times, The Miami Herald, Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, Minneapolis-St. Paul Star Tribune, The New York Times, The Orlando Sentinel, Philadelphia Inquirer, The Sacramento Bee, San Jose Mercury News, South Florida Sun-Sentinel, The Washington Post.

JobWeb and Catapult
Job listings, career services. Run by National Association of Colleges and Employers.

EE/CS Mother Site
Maintained by IEEE at Stanford. Links to 300+ electronic/computer companies' web sites. List of misc. EE/CS web sites.

E-Span
Lob listing and resume posting. You can search job database via educational attainment, years of experience, current job level, salary requirements, geographic areas desired, and keywords. Membership is needed for full search features. Membership is free.

IEEE Employment Services
IEEE maintains this site. Contains job listing by region (California is a region), resume posting, on-line job fairs. Site claims to be for members. Usage seems to be free for all.

Monster Board
Claims 50,000+ job listings in wide range of fields. They like you to sign on, but you can use the service without doing so. I did find a job listing from Stac in San Diego on the board.

Online Career Center
Database of job listings, resume files, company information with on-line searches. Found 237 jobs listings in San Diego from Dec. 29 1995 to July 12, 1996. 31 of the listings were in the first two weeks of July. There were about 60 listings in June.

Salary Data

These can be fun to look at, but not clear if they are useful.
DataMasters Salary Survey
Salary survey of computer jobs by job title in different geographic locations: northeast, midwest, southeast, southwest, west coast

E-Span Salary Data
Data information for Junior Programmer, Programmer/Analyst Senior, Programmer/Analyst on mainframe, midrange-client/server, microcomputer and software engineer.
Pencom Systems Interactive Salary Survey
Software company runs an interactive salary survey. You need to enter your salary data to see data on similar people.

San Diego Union Ads

The following is a summary of the jobs listed in the Sunday San Diego Union. Jobs listed under the categories: computer, engineer, and programmer are cataloged. The jobs listed under engineer that seem targeted for EE's are not recorded, even thought they may require programming. Every system, language, machine, OS, etc. listed in the ads is recorded. If an ad for one position listed 15 desirable languages and programs, then all 15 languages and programs are recorded. So, the tables below just contain the number of times each language, system, computer system, etc. is mentioned in the ads of Sunday edition of the San Diego Sunday Union. This does give an idea of what types of knowledge employers are listing in their ads.

My goal is to provide some insight into the local job market for programmers/computer professionals. I hope to continue this in future. My goal is to catalog one edition of the Union each month. If you find this information useful or have some ideas on how to improve it please let me know. Send mail to whitney@cs.sdsu.edu.

Caveat Emptor

There are problems with this Data

At times it is hard to catalog an ad. I may not catalog them as you would like.

Job types are done poorly. Note that most ads implicitly are looking for programmers or analysts. I do not catalog them.

Some companies do not like to place ads in the paper. So there may be systematic bias in this data

Some companies advertise jobs internally first. So, the "good" jobs may not be advertised outside the company. More bias.

The data seems to over state the number of actual jobs available.

Sometimes errors are made when cataloging the data.

The ads listed this week may not reflect the job market in the future.

The ads listed this week may not reflect the languages/systems currently being used.

When an ad lists PC sometimes it means a job requiring you to use a PC, sometimes it means a job requiring you to write applications for a PC (or DOS, or Window 3.X or Windows 95 or Windows NT), sometimes it means a job requiring you to maintain/fix PC computers, and sometimes it is not clear what it means. I do not separate these different meanings. They are all listed under PC.

I do not provide totals for subgroups. For example, DOS runs on a PC. When an ad requires DOS, it is counted only in DOS category. It is not counted in the PC category.

This data provides some insight into the demand for programmers. The supply of programmers is also important to understand the market. Assume there are 100 ads for language X and 10 for language Y. Further assume that there are 200 programmers what know X looking for work and 5 programmers what know Y looking for work. Then the 5 programmers know Y may be in better shape the 200 that know X, even though X may look more popular. The future demand and supply are also important factors.

Some information is lost by separating the data into individual items. For example, on 12/30/95 it looks like there were 50 ads that mention either C or C++. However, there were probably 20 ads that mention both C and C++, 6 that mention only C and another 4 that mention only C++.

Changes

2/4/96
Treated C/C++ separate from C and C++. Some ads seem to consider C/C++ as one thing. An ad that mentions C/C++ is not counted under C or under C++, just the C/C++ category

10/27/96
Data collected now on a quarterly basis.
Started to collect data on education levels and experience levels requested. Most ads that request a BSCS state BSCS or equivalent. Only jobs that would be appropriate for a BSCS are cataloged. That means jobs requiring a BSEE are under counted.
